PRESENTATION
The Civil Warriors Civil War Round Table of the San Fernando Valley/Los Angeles will hold its next meeting of 2025 at 7:00PM Pacific Daylight Time on Wednesday, May 14, in-person at the Chatsworth Olive Garden. We are pleased to host a presentation by author David Dixon, entitled:
"The Wealthiest Enslaved Woman in Savannah”
In recent years, historians have brought balance and perspective to the study of the Civil War by recounting the agency of women, enslaved and free Blacks, common soldiers and everyday citizens. Their struggles to overcome oppression and grasp freedom are often tragic, yet frequently inspiring. So, the complete account of this momentous conflict remains the greatest untold story in American history. For Blacks, the War promised either freedom and citizenship, or perpetual bondage and despair. Mr. Dixon's talk features two recently published true stories of the Black experience in Civil War Georgia to give voice to these people, enhance our understanding, and honor the sacrifices of those who labored beyond the battlefield.
David Dixon earned a BA in political science from UC Santa Barbara and an MA in history from the University of Massachusetts. David has given more than 100 talks to audiences across the country, including Gettysburg National Military Park, the Southern Historical Association, two to our Civil Warriors CWRT and has appeared on numerous podcasts. He is a contributing writer on the Emerging Civil War blog. He hosts B-List History, a website that features obscure characters and their compelling stories. His latest book (University of Tennessee Press) is the biography German revolutionary and Union General August Willich. His forthcoming book is on Englishman Hugh Forbes, who fought with Garibaldi and was John Brown's drillmaster for Harpers Ferry. Mr. Dixon has also conducted and published original research about the experiences of Blacks in Georgia during the War.
We will be meeting in-person at the Chatsworth Olive Garden, 19724 Nordhoff Place. We meet in the back room ("the 80's Room) of the restaurant; the doors for the room open at 5:30 at which time you can order from their extensive Italian menu. There is a $5 attendance fee to support our CWRT plus it gets you an entry to our book drawing.
